Cherokee County Coroner Releases Identities in Fatal ATV Accident in Piedmont

PIEDMONT, Ala. — The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has released the names of two individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating ATV accident on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in the Piedmont area of Cherokee County.

According to Coroner Paul McDonald, the male driver was identified as Marcus Ragland, 34, of Rome, Georgia. He was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash. The passenger, Ashley Brooke Hawkins, 31, also of Rome, Georgia, was critically injured and transported from the scene for emergency treatment. She was later pronounced deceased at UAB Hospital in Birmingham despite extensive lifesaving efforts.

Details of the Incident

Authorities reported that the crash occurred on private property in the Piedmont community, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, but the force of the accident proved fatal for both victims.

While official findings have not yet been released, investigators are expected to examine speed, terrain, and vehicle conditions as potential contributing factors. ATV crashes often raise safety concerns due to rollover risks and the lack of protective barriers compared to traditional vehicles.

Community Response

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office extended heartfelt condolences to the families of both victims, noting the tragic impact on their loved ones, friends, and coworkers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Mr. Ragland and Ms. Hawkins during this heartbreaking time,” Coroner McDonald said in a statement. “Losing two young lives in such a sudden and tragic way is deeply felt across the community.”

Friends and community members have taken to social media to express grief and share memories of the two Rome residents, describing them as kind-hearted and deeply cherished by those who knew them.

Ongoing Investigation

The accident remains under investigation by local authorities. Additional details, including the circumstances that led to the crash, will be released as they become available.

Officials also used the incident as a reminder of ATV safety, encouraging riders to wear protective gear, avoid risky terrain, and exercise caution, especially when operating on private property.

A Tragic Loss for Two Families

Both Marcus Ragland and Ashley Brooke Hawkins leave behind grieving families and friends who now must cope with their sudden passing. The Rome community, along with those in Piedmont and Cherokee County, are expected to honor their memory in the coming days as funeral arrangements are finalized.
