Peoria County, IL – Illinois State Police (ISP) are investigating the death of a man discovered inside his vehicle after it left the roadway in rural Peoria County on Saturday evening.
According to an ISP spokesperson, troopers with ISP Troop 4 were dispatched at approximately 7:54 p.m. on August 30 following reports of a medical emergency on U.S. Route 24 near Glasford Road. Upon arrival, authorities located a passenger vehicle that had gone into a ditch along the eastbound side of the highway.
Inside the vehicle, officers found a man who was later confirmed to be the driver. Despite emergency personnel responding quickly to the scene, the individual was pronounced dead at the site. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
The incident prompted a temporary closure of eastbound lanes on U.S. Route 24 as investigators conducted an on-site examination. Motorists were diverted from the area for several hours while officers worked to gather evidence and ensure roadway safety. Eastbound lanes were reopened at approximately 10:54 p.m.
At this stage, authorities have not disclosed the cause of the man’s death or whether it was related to a medical condition, crash impact, or other circumstances. An autopsy is expected to be conducted, and ISP has confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
Local residents reported seeing a heavy law enforcement presence in the area during the closure. Several motorists expressed concerns on social media after encountering traffic delays but also extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
The Illinois State Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation to contact Troop 4 headquarters.
