In Loving Memory of Gary Calender: A Beloved Father, Friend, and Storyteller

COLUMBUS, IN — The Columbus community is deeply saddened by the passing of Gary Calender, a devoted father, best friend, and beloved member of the community, who died on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 6:36 p.m. at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was 63 years old.

After more than two weeks of courageously battling for his life in and out of the ICU, Gary’s journey came to an end with his son, Travis Calender, by his side. The heartbreak is felt not only by his family but by the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable 63 years.

A Man of Stories, Music, and Nature

Gary’s life was filled with joy, passion, and authenticity. He was known as a storyteller, able to capture any room with humor, wisdom, and an endless supply of tales. He was a lover of the outdoors, and the Hoosier National Forest was a second home where he found peace and freedom.

Music was woven into his life’s fabric. Whether it was rock and roll or classic country, the songs he loved reflected his personality—spirited, heartfelt, and timeless.

The Life of Every Gathering

Those who had the honor of knowing Gary will always remember him as the life of the party. He had a gift for lifting spirits, cracking jokes, and leaving people in stitches with his quick wit.

Travis fondly called his dad a “part-time comedian”, someone who could bring light into even the heaviest of days. Friends knew they could always count on Gary’s laughter and loyalty, because he lived fully, loved deeply, and gave generously of himself.

Always a “Hell of a Dad”

Though Gary was many things to many people, his proudest role was that of a father. For Travis, he was more than a parent—he was a best friend, mentor, and unwavering supporter.

He showed up for me when it counted, and he was ALWAYS a HELL OF A DAD to me,” Travis shared. “I will forever be a better person because of what I learned from him.

That bond and devotion defined Gary’s life and will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

A Legacy of Friendship and Love

Gary’s circle of friends was vast, and each of them knew him as a man who never met a stranger. His kindness, humor, and presence left an indelible mark. He was someone who loved deeply, lived fully, and embraced people with open arms.

In Travis’s words:
He will be missed by many, and remembered by all of the lives that he’s touched in his 63 years on the earth.

Gratitude in Grief

As the family navigates this difficult time, they have expressed deep appreciation for the outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and community members. The last few weeks, filled with hospital visits and prayers, revealed just how many lives Gary had touched.

I want to thank everyone who reached out to check on him and my family the last few weeks. I love you all so much,” Travis wrote in his emotional tribute.
