BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A Bakersfield Police Department patrol unit was involved in a two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning that ended with a foot chase and the arrest of a 22-year-old man.
According to police, the crash occurred around 2:12 a.m. at the intersection of Avenue C and 10th Street West. Investigators said two individuals inside the second vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting a brief pursuit.
Two Flee, Both Apprehended
Officers quickly chased down and detained both occupants who attempted to run from the crash site. Authorities believe that speed and alcohol played a role in the incident.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle, identified as Yohan Cuellar, 22, of Honduras, was taken into custody on charges connected to the crash. Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could follow. The identity of the second suspect has not yet been released.
Ongoing Investigation
Bakersfield Police have not disclosed whether any officers were injured in the crash, but both vehicles sustained damage and the intersection was shut down for a period of time as crews worked to clear the scene.
“This type of reckless behavior endangers not only those in the vehicle but also our officers and the community,” a department spokesperson said.
Public Safety Reminder
Officials are urging drivers to remember that speeding and impaired driving remain leading causes of crashes across Kern County. Law enforcement agencies continue to emphasize the importance of safe, sober driving to prevent tragedies on local roads.
The crash remains under investigation by the BPD Traffic Unit, with assistance from additional patrol officers. Updates are expected as more information is confirmed.
