HIGHLAND, Ill. — The Highland community is mourning the devastating loss of Gavin Schlarmann, a 27-year-old Emergency Medical Technician and firefighter whose life was cut short in a tragic motorcycle accident on Thursday afternoon.
Schlarmann, a full-time EMT with Abbott Ambulance and a firefighter/EMT with the City of Highland Fire Department, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. His death has sent shockwaves through Highland and neighboring towns, leaving colleagues, family, and friends heartbroken.
A Life Devoted to Service
From an early age, Schlarmann dedicated himself to serving others. After graduating from Highland High School, he pursued emergency medical training at Southwest Illinois College (SWIC), earning his certification as an EMT.
He quickly became known among peers for his tireless work ethic and his ability to remain calm under pressure — qualities that made him a respected figure in the emergency medical services community.
Alongside his work in EMS and firefighting, Schlarmann shared his musical talents as a drum instructor in Staunton, Illinois, mentoring young musicians and leaving an impact that extended far beyond his professional roles.

In a statement, Gavin’s sister, Lola Schlarmann, expressed the family’s grief and shared memories of her brother’s vibrant spirit:
“Gavin was a devoted full-time member of Highland EMS and had also served with HFD, touching many lives through his work and his big heart. He lived life fully—always persevering through tough times, chasing his dreams, and bringing a little bit of trouble and joy wherever he went.”
Friends and colleagues described Gavin as someone who “never met a stranger,” with a sense of humor and a genuine kindness that made him unforgettable.

Schlarmann’s contributions extended well beyond his professional career. Formerly a sales associate at Rick’s Ace Hardware, he was known for his reliability and friendliness in every role he held.
His service with Highland Fire Department and Abbott Ambulance reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others — often putting the safety and well-being of strangers before his own.
