25-Year-Old New York Tourist Kevin Mares Fatally Shot in San Juan’s La Perla Neighborhood

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The vibrant streets of San Juan fell silent late Friday night after the fatal shooting of Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old tourist from Queens, New York, in the historic La Perla neighborhood. Authorities have confirmed an active investigation is underway into the killing, which has shaken both the local community and visitors to the island.

Fatal Shooting in La Perla

According to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, officers were called to the scene just before 11:30 p.m. on Friday following reports of gunfire near one of La Perla’s narrow coastal streets. Upon arrival, they found Mares lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

First responders attempted life-saving measures before transporting him to the Centro Médico de Puerto Rico in Río Piedras, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Tourist Visit Ends in Tragedy

Authorities say Mares had arrived in Puerto Rico earlier in the week for a short vacation. Sources close to the investigation indicated he was exploring La Perla—a colorful neighborhood popular with tourists—when the shooting occurred.

Police have not yet released details about a possible motive, but investigators are reviewing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses to determine whether Mares was targeted or the victim of random violence.

La Perla’s History and Reputation

La Perla, located just outside the walls of Old San Juan, is known for its rich history, vibrant murals, and cultural heritage. However, the neighborhood has also faced challenges with crime, and local leaders have been working to improve safety for residents and visitors alike.

Friday night’s killing has reignited concerns about security, especially for tourists unfamiliar with the area’s complexities.

Investigation Ongoing

Detectives from the San Juan Criminal Investigations Corps are leading the case, with assistance from the Tourist Police Division. So far, no arrests have been made. Officials are urging anyone with information to contact Puerto Rico Crime Stoppers at 787-343-2020.

Police Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa issued a statement calling the incident “a tragic and unacceptable act of violence,” vowing that authorities “will pursue justice for the victim and his family.”

Family and Community Reactions

Friends of Mares in Queens describe him as a friendly, ambitious young man who loved to travel and experience new cultures. “He was full of life,” said a neighbor. “It’s heartbreaking to think he went on vacation and never came back.”

In Puerto Rico, residents of La Perla expressed both sadness and frustration, saying the shooting damages the progress made to change perceptions of the neighborhood. A local business owner commented, “We’ve worked so hard to bring people here to see the beauty of La Perla. This tragedy hurts us all.”

Tourism and Safety Concerns

Puerto Rico’s tourism sector, still recovering from pandemic-related challenges, is sensitive to incidents involving visitors. Local authorities have stressed that most tourist areas remain safe but urge travelers to exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company said in a statement that it is “deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Mares and stands ready to support the investigation and provide assistance to the victim’s loved ones.”
