The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that the horrifying incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 4, 2025. Investigators say the teenage suspect called 911 himself shortly after the shootings and confessed to dispatchers that he had killed both of his parents. Deputies responded immediately to the home on the 3100 block of Scenic Drive, where they discovered the two adults deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking and disturbing cases we’ve encountered in recent memory,” said Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook during a press briefing. “We’re dealing with the deaths of two loving parents and a young suspect whose life will also be forever altered. Our investigators are working diligently to piece together the details and motives behind this tragedy.”
Teen Called 911 and Waited for Deputies
According to authorities, Trevor Smith remained on the phone with emergency dispatchers until deputies arrived. He was taken into custody without incident and was reportedly cooperative during the initial investigation. A firearm was recovered from the scene, and officials have confirmed that it belonged to the household.
Law enforcement has not released specific details about what may have led up to the shootings, but they confirmed that Trevor was the only other individual present in the home at the time. The teen is now facing two counts of first-degree murder and is being held at the Clay County Juvenile Detention Center. The State Attorney’s Office will determine whether he will be tried as an adult.

The tight-knit community of Middleburg, located southwest of Jacksonville, is reeling from the news.
